Sean M. HArmon

“The arts are the best insurance policy a city can take on itself.”
–Woody Dumas, former Mayor of Baton Rouge
". . . the arts have been an inseparable part of the human journey; indeed, we depend on the arts to carry us toward the fullness of our humanity. We value them for themselves, and because we do, we believe knowing and practicing them is fundamental to the healthy development of our children's minds and spirits. That is why, in any civilization - ours included - the arts are inseparable from the very meaning of the term 'education.' We know from long experience that no one can claim to be truly educated who lacks basic knowledge and skills in the arts."
–National Standards for Arts Education

Who is Mr. Harmon?

About the Instructor:
Mr. Sean Harmon has been leading Drama programs since 1998. With a few students and a production budget of $0 - $300, his programs have grown to produce shows that combine the efforts of 70 – 100 students and much higher production values. Prior to joining the staff of HCHS, Sean was brought to Michigan Center High School and to Ionia to rebuild the Drama and Broadcasting programs.  In 2011, he was brought in to rebuild the Harper Creek Drama Program after several years of decay.
Mr. Harmon began working professionally in the entertainment industry at fourteen years old and used the money he earned as a professional performer and technician to help pay his way through college. He received his Bachelors of Fine Arts degree in Musical Theatre [Theatre, Music-Vocal Performance, and Dance] from the Western Michigan University, a Bachelor’s degree in Theatre, Communications and English from Eastern Michigan University and upon graduation began working professionally in theatrical tours and venues all over the nation. During his time working professionally, he worked on over 170 plays, musicals, films and commercials.  In addition to his work in theatre, Sean often works with arts camps, where he taught acting and directed shows. It was the experience with these students that led Mr. Harmon to leave the professional world and turn his passion for the arts into a career in education. In the process, he earned a graduate teacher’s certification from EMU, two Master’s degrees in Education Administration and Curriculum and Development, and did Master’s work with the Missouri Repertory Theatre in Kansas City.
Sean’s work in the theatre has been seen throughout the Michigan and Jackson area, both on and off stage. His work has ranged from dramatic roles to the comedic character in many musicals. He has also won a number of awards for his work in Children’s Theatre. Mr. Harmon has also had the opportunity to act in a number of feature films

Mr. Harmon’s goal is to inspire and help his students believe that they are capable of doing much more than a “high school” production. His students believe in putting on “high quality” productions.
